Close reading

It’s time for another installment of “random things Becky discovered while reading laws much more closely than anyone ever should.”

Today we have the Water Pollution Control Act of 1984, effective March 16, 1985 (D.C. Law 5-188; D.C. Official Code 8-103.01 et seq.). Section 2, definitions. Paragraph (1), “Act.” I quote:

“For the purposes of this act, the term “Act” means the Water Pollution Control Act of 1984.”

I paraphrase: For the purposes of this act, the term act means this act.

To this I have two words: Thank you?
